How to get a kanban board for Google Tasks
Google Tasks only shows lists. Here is how to see the same tasks as a board in 2026, for yourself or a whole team, without moving them out of Google.
Google Tasks has no board view, no columns, and no status field. You get flat lists in the Gmail and Calendar sidebars and the mobile apps.
The usual fix is a board app built on the Google Tasks API that shows your lists as columns, so dragging a card to another column moves the task to another list. Your tasks stay real Google Tasks.
For a personal board, TasksBoard's free plan is the simplest start. For a board your team shares, with assignees and comments, use Team Tasks (our product, free for up to 3 people).
Why Google Tasks has no board view
A kanban board needs two things Google Tasks does not have: a status for each task (to do, doing, done) and a screen that lays those statuses out as columns. A Google Task is simply open or completed, and it lives in one list. Google has added starred tasks and a full-screen view on the web over the years, but no board.
Every Google Tasks board app gets around this the same way: each list becomes a column. Create lists called To do, Doing, and Done, and an app can show them side by side. Moving a card from Doing to Done moves the task between those lists in Google Tasks, which is why the change also shows up in Gmail and on your phone.

Option 1: Get as close as you can with Google Tasks alone
If you only need a rough board for yourself and do not want another app, you can fake one:
- Create three lists: To do, Doing, and Done. (Google Tasks also keeps completed tasks in each list's Completed section, so some people use two lists and let "done" be the checkbox.)
- Open Google Tasks full-screen on the web from Google Calendar's Tasks view, where your lists are easier to scan than in the narrow sidebar.
- When you start a task, open its menu and move it to the Doing list.
It works, but there is no dragging between columns, no card view, and no way to share it. Once you want to see at a glance what is in progress, an actual board app is worth the two minutes it takes to connect.
Option 2: A personal board with TasksBoard
TasksBoard is a full-screen kanban app for Google Tasks and the most established option. Connect your Google account, and your lists appear as columns you can drag cards between, with changes written back to Google Tasks. As of October 2026, the free plan includes one board, Google Tasks sync, a Chrome extension, and up to 5 shared lists you own. Multiple boards, labels, and shared boards need Pro ($4.79 a month billed yearly) or Team ($4.99 per user per month billed yearly), and everyone who joins a shared board needs a paid plan.
For one person who wants their own Google Tasks on a board, TasksBoard's free plan is hard to beat, and we would point you there.
Option 3: A team board with Team Tasks (that's us)
Team Tasks is built for the case where the board belongs to a team. A company is organized into departments, each with shared kanban boards, and everyone sees changes live without refreshing.
- Sign in at app.team-tasks.io with Google and create your company, or start from your personal board.
- Create a shared board in a department. Shared boards are backed by a designated team Google account, so the team has one copy of each task in Google Tasks instead of a copy per person.
- On a Google-synced board, each column is one of the team account's Google Tasks lists. Link existing lists as columns, or add a column, and Team Tasks creates the matching list in Google Tasks.
- Invite teammates by email, assign tasks, add labels, and discuss them in comments with @mentions.
Besides the board, the same tasks can be shown as a list, a table, or a calendar, and each person gets a My Day agenda across every department they belong to. Title, notes, due date, and done state sync both ways with Google. Edits in Team Tasks are pushed right away, and changes made in Google Tasks are pulled about once a minute while the board is open, otherwise about every 10 minutes, or immediately with Sync now. Assignees, comments, and labels stay in Team Tasks, because Google's task format has nowhere to store them.
Honest limits: Team Tasks has no native desktop or mobile apps (it is an installable web app that works offline), no automations, and no timelines. It is free for companies of up to 3 members, then $2 per user per month with a $10 monthly minimum, after a 14-day free trial. Guests on shared boards are always free.
Option 4: Leave Google Tasks for Trello or Asana
If your team wants a board plus automation, integrations, and timelines, a dedicated tool is the honest answer. Trello is the classic kanban app, with a free tier and Standard at $5 per user per month billed yearly. Asana is a full work-management platform, free for 2 users and $10.99 per user per month billed yearly for Starter. The trade-off is that your tasks move into a new system and no longer appear in Gmail or the Google Tasks apps. We compare both in Team Tasks vs Trello and Team Tasks vs Asana.
Setting up columns that work
Whichever app you use, a few habits keep a Google Tasks board useful:
- Start with three or four columns. To do, Doing, Waiting, and Done covers most teams. Every extra column is another Google Tasks list in someone's sidebar.
- Limit work in progress. If Doing has more cards than people, nothing is really in progress.
- Name lists for the board, not the person. Lists like "Sam's stuff" break down once the board is shared. Use assignees for ownership and columns for status.
- Use due dates. Dates sync to Google Tasks and show up on Google Calendar, so they are the part of the board everyone sees even outside the app.
Frequently asked questions
Does Google Tasks have a kanban board view?
No. Google Tasks shows flat lists in the Gmail and Calendar sidebars and in its mobile apps, and there is no board, column, or status field. To see Google Tasks as a kanban board you need an app built on the Google Tasks API, such as TasksBoard or Team Tasks, which shows your lists as columns while the tasks stay in Google.
How do kanban apps for Google Tasks turn lists into columns?
Because Google Tasks has no status field, board apps use lists as columns: a To do list, a Doing list, and a Done list become three columns. Moving a card between columns moves the task to another list. In Team Tasks, each column on a Google-synced board is one of the team account's Google Tasks lists, and adding a column creates its list in Google Tasks.
Is there a free kanban board for Google Tasks?
Yes. As of October 2026, TasksBoard's free plan includes one full-screen kanban board over your Google Tasks. Team Tasks is free for companies of up to 3 members, including shared boards, assignees, and comments, and costs $2 per user per month from the 4th member, with a $10 monthly minimum.
Will my tasks still show up in Gmail if I use a kanban app?
Yes, with apps built on the Google Tasks API. TasksBoard and Team Tasks keep tasks as ordinary Google Tasks, so they still appear in the Gmail and Calendar sidebars and the Google Tasks mobile apps. On a Team Tasks shared board, the tasks live in the board's team Google account. Switching to Trello or Asana is different: those tools move your tasks into their own systems.
